Janine Teñoso has the voice that we’ve heard before. A dreamer who started in the TV singing competition Born To Be A Star two years ago, Janine has come a long way since then. Already a signed artist with Viva, she has been the voice behind some of the soundtracks of Filipino movie favorites such as 100 Tula Para Kay Stella, The Barker, and more recently for the Anne Curtis and Dingdong Dantes box office hit Sid and Aya with a beautiful rendition of Itchyworms’ Di Na Muli.
In an exclusive interview, we get to know the singer-song writer who has been making waves in the local showbiz industry.
INSIDE SHOWBIZ: At what age did you realize that you wanted to become a singer?
JANINE TEÑOSO: I actually started singing when I was five years old. Nakuha ko yung inspiration ko with singing through my sister tapos ayun, nag-training ako and then nag-join ako sa church tapos dun ko na-realize habang lumalaki ako na ‘Hey it’s my passion pala!'”
How did you get into the showbiz industry?
I joined this TV contest in Tv5 it’s called “Born to be a Star” tapos di po ako nanalo ‘don finalist lang ako. VIVA got me as a solo artist.
Did you ever think singing was going to be your profession?
Actually I didn’t know na ito talaga yung magiging job ko. I used to be a business management student which is walang relation sa music. Before I thought na hobby lang siya but yun, dinala ako ni Lord dito so I think that this is my purpose.
What was your first project with VIVA?
The very first project that we did was my very first single, I wrote it. It’s called “Fall” and ayun ni-record namin, yun yung first release ko and then sumunod na yung mga theme songs for movies katulad ng 100 Tula Para Kay Stella, The Barker, and this one the latest one, Sid and Aya, yung Di na Muli.
Your rendition of Di Na Muli for Sid and Aya 28 million views so far and still counting, did you expect this kind of reception?
Like, how do I do my own version? Pero ayun nga sobrang greatful sa lahat ng na-rerecieve kong love ngayon from strangers.
How did it feel when you first saw Sid and Aya and you heard your song bring the movie to life?
Nakakatuwa siya. Actually I was speechless, like I don’t know what to say nung una kong napanood yung Sid and Aya and nung ginamit yung song, sabi ko ‘Ako ba yan?’ Para kasing whoa na-match talaga yung feel ng song dun sa feel ng scene na yun kaya super happy.
Did Itchyworms comment on your rendition?
Actually after na-release yung Di Na Muli, nag-message sakin si Jugs of Itchyworms and he asked me if I wanted to sing with them and we did sa isang bar sa 12 Monkeys and then sa Showtime din kanabukasan.
How did it feel being messaged by Itchyworms and being asked to perform with them?
Super shocking talaga! I did not expect it from them na i-message pa nila ako and they’re really humble.
Who are your musical influences?
Internationally sila Adele, Bruno Mars, Beyonce, Amy Winehouse. Locally, siyempre si Miss Regine Velasquez and ate Sarah G and ate KZ Tandingan.
Apart from singing, you have also tried your hand at acting. Can you tell us more about that?
Yes! My first acting role was in One Song, it’s a VIVA TV series. Ang pangalan ko dun ay Abby Romero tapos alone siya and she lived without her parents kasi OFW parents niya. And ang source of inspiration niya lang ay ang love life niya. Yun yung kwento ni Abby.
How was your experience in acting?
The directors and the staff really helped me push na lumabas si Abby. Since first time ko lang mag-act, nung unang days hindi pa daw nila nakikita si Abby sakin so after a series of workshops and through our director, nailabas ko yung pagka-melancholic ni Abby. It was really hard at first but then once you get to know it, ang sarap na mag-play na ng different characters.
Who else do you want to collaborate with in the OPM industry?
Sila ate Sarah G, of course, sila Miss Regine, Ate KZ, and bands like Ben&Ben, IV of Spades.
Off-camera and off-stage, who is Janine?
I could say that I’m more of a laid back person but then when I’m with my family and my closest friends, ayan na parang lumalabas yung different side of me. Hindi ko alam kung sino ako but then I’m really a fun fun type of person when I’m with my closest friends.
What’s next for you?
Hopefully I’ll get to release my own album and hopefully there’s gonna be more acting roles for me given by VIVA.
