When three of the most brilliant actors of their generation come together to star in a film, you get a powerhouse cast that is not just striking onscreen but can certainly give justice to roles that only the best can bring to life. The trio of Bea Alonzo, Paulo Avelino, and Derek Ramsay posses such a strong chemistry. With every click of the camera, they turn serious, giving off looks that are intense, brooding, and captivating. Bea holds on to Paulo while Derek clings on to Bea. They clearly form a love triangle but they clarify that their movie is not just another film dealing with an affair. Despite its title which translates into marriage in English, Kasal does not even touch on the subject of infidelity.
Generations are defined by icons that leave an unforgettable mark through their work. This generation will remember Bea Alonzo (@beaalonzo), Paulo Avelino (@pauavelino), Derek Ramsay (@ramsayderek07) as the ones who have set the standard in their craft that their younger colleagues will have to live up to. Still at the peak of their careers, the main cast of Kasal share their experiences in pushing boundaries in this year’s biggest drama movie. Bea expresses excitement about her movie comeback especially because the genre is closest to her heart. “I missed doing drama so medyo parang kailangan ko na siyang gawin. It’s one genre na I feel like I’m good at and parang feeling ko I have to give this to my fans,” says the Movie Queen of this generation who has done memorable performances as Basha in One More Chance and A Second Chance, Mia in Miss You Like Crazy, Sari in The Mistress, Bobbie in Four Sisters and a Wedding, Kat in She’s the One, and Adie in The Love Affair. “Gusto ko ‘yun kasi parang binibigyan ako ng new kind of drive kasi 17 years na ako sa industry and 17 years na ako siguro sa drama. Kapag nakakaramdam ako ng ganun, natutuwa ako.” This statement may be quite surprising because it comes from someone who has bagged accolades from the FAMAS Awards, PMPC Star Awards, Gawad PASADO, Gawad Genio, Luna Awards, Aral-Parangal, and Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation Box Office Entertainment Awards. But, Bea admits that she has much more to learn about her craft.
The Kasal lead cast adds that their director, Ruel S. Bayani, made sure that their set was fun and productive. “His style, his attitude, his personality when he’s on the set and when we’re not taking, is just so alive. Kuwento-kuwento, always laughing. And the best part, there are directors out there that collaborate with actors but not as much as Direk Ruel to the point that we sit down and write the entire scene. It goes to show how much trust he has in his actors,” says Derek of his director whom he worked with in the 2011 smash hit No Other Woman. Paulo jokes that another challenge on the set was actually crafting suggestions every time Direk Ruel asked him. “He basically forces us to think and come up with something.” Turning serious, he says of his director whom he has also worked with for the first time: “Direk Ruel is known to make mature films. What sets this apart from the past movies he has made is I think that this film is more brave to tackle issues that haven’t been discussed in Star Cinema films in the past.”
