“Kasal” Lead Cast Shares Their Experience On The Movie Set

  • May 25, 2018

Derek Ramsay starts the conversation about the cast’s experience on the set of Kasal. “We all sat together and said this is by far the least stressful set that we’ve had. Talagang walang stress even if we shot sa Cebu, Pampanga, and Laguna, except for late nights sometimes,” relates Derek. Paulo Avelino echoes, “I’m just happy that I got to work with these two actors who are very mature and very open to suggestions and collaborations.”

The Kasal lead cast adds that their director, Ruel S. Bayani, made sure that their set was fun and productive. “His style, his attitude, his personality when he’s on the set and when we’re not taking, is just so alive. Kuwento-kuwento, always laughing. And the best part, there are directors out there that collaborate with actors but not as much as Direk Ruel to the point that we sit down and write the entire scene. It goes to show how much trust he has in his actors,” says Derek of his director whom he worked with in the 2011 smash hit No Other Woman.

Bea Alonzo recounts, “Ang sarap niyang katrabaho kasi sobrang collaborative niya. Talagang nagtatanong siya kung anong suggestions namin sa scene. Tinatanong niya anong character journey namin. That way, na-o-own namin ‘yung character.” She shares her learnings after finally getting to work with Direk Ruel. “Hindi ko dapat ikahon ang sarili ko pagdating sa drama kasi siguro ‘yung comfort zone ko is ‘yung subtle kind of drama and I feel like I won’t lose that. It’s my style. It’s who I am. But he taught me how to push myself na puwede naman maging subtle but at the same time, entertaining. Parang may cinematic license. And that’s what I appreciate. He makes it entertaining for the audience.”

Paulo jokes that another challenge on the set was actually crafting suggestions every time Direk Ruel asked him. “He basically forces us to think and come up with something.” Turning serious, he says of his director whom he has also worked with for the first time: “Direk Ruel is known to make mature films. What sets this apart from the past movies he has made is I think that this film is more brave to tackle issues that haven’t been discussed in Star Cinema films in the past.”
